Have you got a new dog? Then you need to register it with your commune. The commune will register you and your dog in the AMICUS database and assign you an ID. This database includes all dog owners in Switzerland and their dogs. The commune also registers address changes, changes of owner or the death of a dog.
Not all communes are responsible for registration and dog tax. Contact your commune to find out whether the commune or the canton is responsible in your case.

If your dog is registered (see above), you will receive an annual invoice for the dog tax from your commune or your canton. The amount of the tax can vary from commune to commune. It amounts to about CHF 100 to 200. The tax may also vary depending on the size or weight of the dog. Guide dogs and rescue dogs are often exempt from tax. Many communes also provide a discount for guard dogs on farms.
